According to the U.S. Census, 1.9% of American households rely on wood for heat. Whether you purchase firewood as a luxury or a necessity, you should opt for hardwoods over softwoods.
We've found that you will generally get almost twice as much heat value from hardwoods as you do from softwoods. From an economic standpoint, you get more bang for your buck. In our experience, a full cord of aged softwoods can sometimes weigh only half of what a full cord of aged hardwoods would weigh. In turn, this forces you to reorder more often, costing you more money in the long run when purchasing firewood for sale.
When you choose Pinnacle Firewood Company for fire wood delivery and sales, you are supporting a professional local firewood company, not an out-of-town door-knocker vendor. We also guarantee our volumes according to the Minnesota Dept. of Weights and Measures. We will never mix softwoods like pine, poplar, or willow and claim to sell you a hardwood mix. We have run an honest business for over 15 years, and our large repeat customer base is a testimonial to that.
All of our firewood is generally seasoned for 1.5 to 2.5 years, depending on the species of wood.
Since we are local to the Twin Cities Metro Area, we can generally fill orders in less than 24 hours. That is a large advantage we have over many of our competitors who are hours away from the Twin Cities. If you need an order fulfilled quickly, take a look at our selection of firewood for sale.
You may see 1/3 of cord for $95.00 in your local newspaper. We sold wood at that price, too, back in 1993.
If you see very cheap prices, you can typically expect that the firewood is probably not seasoned. The wood will be criss-cross stacked (so you will only receive about 60% of what you paid for, in our experience), or it will be a mix of junk, and you will burn through it rapidly and have to reorder very quickly.
Also, it seems that in this day and age, everyone with a pickup truck and a chainsaw claims to be a firewood business. When ordering from these vendors, we've found that they generally run out or leave you high and dry when they go out of business in a year or two.
Avoid partial cords or unusual measurements. Some vendors sell 3' by 4' stacks or 3' by 7' stacks. You may feel like you are getting a good deal, but if you calculate the volume in full cords, your purchase could cost you more than you think!
Most of our firewood pieces are processed to a uniform length of 15" to 16". These are fairly standard lengths and typically fit well in either a wood stove or a fireplace. We can also do custom orders if you have a small wood stove or a large fireplace.
Put simply, free stacking is a rip-off. Your order should be stacked in a straight, tight row. The scam comes when these supposed "nice guys" offer to stack your wood for free. Then, when you come out with your checkbook, your woodpile looks like a Jenga game. This criss-cross stacking fashion gives you a lot of air space and little of the firewood that you paid for. In our experience, criss-cross stacking can yield 30% to 50% less volume.
Please don't feel bad if you have been a victim of this deceitful business practice. Unfortunately, many fly-by-night outfits have been doing this to unknowing customers for years.
Quality is essential. The old saying that you get what you pay for is very true when purchasing firewood for sale. Pinnacle Firewood Company only sells clean, split, uniform, quality firewood.
Also, seasoned wood is very important. We recommend avoiding hardwoods that are under a year seasoned. The sap in the wood will create creosote in your chimney and could potentially cause a chimney fire.
Finally, quantity is crucial. We recommend that you only deal with firewood companies that sell standard firewood measurements: 1/6 cord, 1/4 cord, 1/3 cord, 1/2 cord, 2/3 cord, and full 4' by 4' by 8' cords (128 cubic feet).
Keeping your firewood outdoors and stacked in a wood rack is ideal. Keep it away from your home, and elevate it a good 6" off the ground. By doing this, you help keep insects and rodents at bay.
A small tarp or cover over the top quarter of your firewood stack is a good idea for those rainy and snowy days. On sunny days, remove the cover to allow airflow to the stack.
We always recommend having a couple-day supply of firewood indoors. This wood has a chance to warm up to room temperature and give the proper combustion to start a good fire.
Having a dirty chimney robs you of airflow to your fireplace or wood stove. This will result in a frustrating firewood-burning experience. Also, heavy creosote buildup can cause a chimney fire.
If you burn clean, seasoned firewood, you should keep your chimney cleaning down to a minimum. The number of times you are required to have your chimney cleaned or inspected depends on how often you burn firewood in a season.
